+ 2 PV
+ 2-3 en I
+ 3 A

+ 1 PV
+ 1-2 en I
+ 2 A

+1 PV +50 pts
+1 en I +5 pts
+1 A 25 pts

armure a 5+ +10 pts
armure a 1+ +25 pts
svg inv a 6+ +15 pts
svg inv a 5+ 30 pts
svg inv a 4+ +45 pts

The following rules are a system designed in order for Warhammer players to create and use their own personalised Special Characters for use in friendly games of Warhammer. Following the steps detailed below in the presented order will result in the player having made a Special Character ready to be used in any game of Warhammer. These Special Characters should not need to be play-tested before using, but an appropriate model must be converted to represent the Special Character. In addition, you must inform your opponent before each of you each create your Army Lists that you will be including a Special Character made using this system. It is not necessary that both players agree to the use of these Special Characters (as they should be quite balanced), though you are free to come to any arrangement with your opponent as you see fit. Note that these rules include the characters as presented in all the current Army Books, and preview army lists.

Step One: Characteristics.

The following rules apply to Special Characters, Monstrous Mounts, Bestial Mounts, Followers and Pets.
The first thing to decide is what kind of profile the character will have. The base cost for a Special Character will be 8 points. To create a Special Character’s profile, you must, of course, decide which race he/she will belong to. This will determine what the Special Character’s racial characteristic maximum’s will be. Then, write down the profile that you wish for your character to have. Once you have the profile that you wish to use, cross-reference any increases to the ‘Basic Characteristics’ profile with the ‘Points Cost’ table to work out the basic points cost for the character. For example if you increased the character’s WS to 6, then you would add +9 points to his cost, bringing him to 17 points. Continue in this way until you have added the points cost for all of the Special Character’s increased characteristics.

Any characteristics may be increased above the Special Character's racial limits, but each increase will be at double cost. For example, if an Orc was to have Initiative 6, then Initiative 4 will be at +2 points, but Initiative 5 and 6 will be at +4 points each. Note, that no characteristic may be increased above 10, and no Special Character may increase their Strength or Toughness characteristics above their racial maximums. Any of the Special Character's statistics may be reduced below the 'Basic Characteristics’ profile. In this case, subtract the given points cost for the characteristic, rather than adding it. For example, to subtract 2 points of BS from the character, you would -6 points from his overall points cost. Remember, Vampire Bloodlines will affect the Character's final Characteristics, and should be taken into account once you have paid for ALL the Upgrades you wish to include. For example, if you want to have a Necrarch Vampire with WS5, then you would have to pay the points for WS7; as the Upgrade to Necrarch Vampire Bloodline will include the -2WS penalty. Note, you may not reduce a Special Character’s BS below 3, unless their Racial Maximum is 0. Also note, that a Character may only ever increase their Wounds characteristic by 1 point above their Racial Maximum, unless they have Massive Stature, in which case they may increase their Wounds characteristic up to 10 as mentioned earlier.

Attacks characteristics are treated differently. Each additional Attack above the Racial Maximum will be increasingly more expensive, as shown on the Additional Attacks table. Note that these are not doubled, but are the total cost per additional Attack. For example, a Hobgoblin Character with 5 Attacks would pay +7 points per Attack for Attacks 2 and 3; +14 points for Attack 4; and +21 points for Attack 5 for a total of +49 points for all of his Attacks.

Also, any Special Character who takes his Leadership Value above his Racial Maximum must pay +12 points if they wish to go from LD9 to LD10.

All characters made using this system will automatically take up a Hero slot. Note, that some Hero upgrades will force the character to count as additional choices, for example, a Black Orc Big Boss will count as two Hero choices. If a Character is upgraded to a Lord, then he will take a Lord choice, rather than a Hero choice.
Note, a Special Character whose total points cost is 350 points or over (this includes the Special Character’s Special Abilities, Magic Items and Equipment), will take an additional Hero choice, and will also count as a Lord Choice (i.e. a Lord and 2 Hero choices). A Character that costs over 720 points will take an additional Lord choice. These are cumulative, so a 720+ points character will count as 2 Lords and 2 Heroes. If the character is only upgraded to a Hero choice, then they will automatically count as a Lord choice instead, if their points cost is between 280 and 349 points. See the table for clarification.

Note, Wizards have a separate Racial Maximum to the rest of their race. These are clearly noted on the Racial Maximums table.

All characters will follow the usual rules for Characters (as described on pages 92-102 of the Warhammer Rulebook), and may only be included in the army of their racial type. For example, an Orc Big Boss would have to be included in an Orc and Goblin army. The only exception is that any model with a Mark of Chaos may be included in either their own racial army, or in a Chaos army. For example, a High Elf Lord with the Mark of Slaanesh could be included in either a High Elf army or a Chaos Army.

Finally, some Special Abilities (such as Flammable) will reduce the character's points cost, rather than increase it. Therefore, regardless of the character's actual points cost, he will always cost at least a minimum of 8 points.

Step Two: Racial Upgrade.

Once you have created the Special Character’s ‘Basic’ points cost, and Characteristic Profile, you must now add the points for his racial type. For example, if your Special Character were a Wood Elf Bladeweaver, then you would further increase his ‘Basic’ points cost by +66 points.

Note that a Special Character may only take 1 Racial Upgrade. For example, a Black Orc Big Boss may not also be an Orc Shaman. Each upgrade allows certain benefits, and also includes certain disadvantages, such as Orc Animosity, or Dwarf Relentless special rules. Each of these will be covered alongside each Upgrade. Note, that once a character is upgraded to become a particular race, this automatically allows them the option of taking Magic Items from their own race's Magic Item list. See the relevant Army Books for descriptions of each Special Character's Racial Special Rules (i.e. for the description of the Skaven ‘Life is Cheap’ rule, refer to the Skaven Army Book).

Spell Casters may only take the spells that are available to their equivalent character. For example, a Necromancer may only take Necromancy or Death Magic spells.

Certain Racial Upgrades also include some of the Special Abilities from the list below (Step 3). For example, Tomb Kings and Tomb Princes are Flammable. Where a Racial Upgrade includes an ability listed in Step 3, the Special Character does not have to pay any extra points, as the cost of their Racial Upgrade includes the cost for the Special Ability. Also note that the Special Abilities listed for each Racial Upgrade does not count towards the maximum number of Special Abilities that a character may take. The same rule applies where characters have items of equipment (such as Wood Elf Longbows), as they will not have to pay any extra points to use the listed equipment.

Vampires do not have to pay any extra points to choose what Bloodline they follow. All the rules for Bloodlines as detailed in the Vampire Counts army book apply.

Slann Mage Priests may be upgraded to be of one of the different Generations as outlined in the Lizardmen army book.

Finally, the Racial Maximums for Human and Human Wizard covers Empire, Kislev, Bretonnia, Necromancers, Undead Heroes/Lords and Khemri Undead Heroes/Lords. Where any Undead Heroes/Lords and Khemri Undead Heroes/Lords have been further upgraded (eg Vampire), then they will use the appropriate Racial Maximum instead. The Racial Maximum for Chaos Warrior covers Chaos Warriors and Chaos Marauders. The Racial Maximum for Dwarf covers Dwarves and Chaos Dwarves. The Racial Maximum for Elf covers High Elves, Dark Elves and Wood Elves.

Step Three: Special Abilities.

A Special Character may take up to three Special Abilities from the Special Abilities list. The points costs for these abilities are further added to the Special Character’s ‘Basic’ points cost.

Note that an Undead Character is already Immune to all Psychology based tests (but may still suffer from Stupidity, Frenzy, and Hatred), and Causes Fear.
Note, any Race may have a Mark of Chaos in addition to the 3 Abilities. However, if they are not part of a Chaos army, then the Mark will cost +15% more (see the Table). Note also, that a Special Character that is not part of a Chaos army may not take the Mark of Chaos Undivided. Note also, that no Wizard (of any race) can take the Marks of Khorne or Tzeentch.
None of the Special Abilities upgrades in the following list are a substitute for any special upgrade available to characters of the same Race (such as Knightly Virtues, or Vampire Bloodline Powers), and characters should use the points for those Powers, rather than their equivalent from the Special Abilities table.

Note, that a character may not take certain abilities (such as Frenzy and Hatred) together. These are clearly noted on the Abilities table.

None of the Special Abilities chosen for the Special Character may be used by other members of the unit he joins (unless otherwise stated), with the only exception being Magic Resistance. For example, a Special Character that is Immune to Fear will not make a unit that he joins also become Immune to Fear.

No special Abilities may take any Characteristic above 10.

Step Four: Equipment.

Once you have created the Special Character’s profile and his ‘Basic’ points cost, you need to decide what equipment he/she will be armed with. The points for the various Close Combat and Missile weapons and Armour that are available to the Special Character are listed in the Equipment Table.

Note, that a Special Character will automatically be equipped with a single Hand Weapon for no additional points cost (except for all Orc Characters of all types. Their Choppa replaces their Hand Weapon). All weapons are available to all Racial types, unless otherwise noted.
Where a particular race is noted next to a Weapon (for example Repeater Crossbows are Dark Elves only) then the noted race may take the Weapon at the listed cost. Any other race must pay twice the points cost to be equipped with the weapon. For example, an Orc Hero would have to pay 14 points for a Pistol. Note, Bretonnian Dukes and Paladins may never be equipped with any form of Missile or Black Power Weapon.

Note, a Special Character may not have a normal Close Combat Weapon in addition to a Magic Weapon. They must take one or the other, but not both. Nor may they carry two Magic Weapons.

No Magic Items may take any Characteristic above 10.

Step Five: Mounts.

Any Special Character may be further upgraded to be mounted. This may take the form of a Steed, a Chariot or a powerful Monster. The points for the Mount can be found in the Mounts table. The special rules for the Monsters can be found in the relevant Amy Books, or the High Elf Army Book. Dwarf and Skaven Special Characters may not ride any mount of any type. Note that Slann are only allowed to take Palanquin Bearers as an alternative Mount to their usual Palanquin.

The options for most Special Characters therefore are: On Foot; Mounted on a Steed, Mounted on a Monster, Mounted on a Monstrous Mount, Mounted on a Bestial Mount, Mounted on a Chariot, Carried by Bearers (counts as Being Mounted for all intents and purposes). Monstrous Mounts, Bestial Mounts and Bearers are found in the list “Special Character Mount Maker”. Monstrous Mounts covers creatures such as Dragons and other powerful and large creatures. Bestial Mounts covers creatures such as Bears, Young Monsters, and so forth.

Any Special Character may ride a Chariot for the appropriate points cost. A chariot may only be drawn by Beasts that the character himself may ride. For example, Boars may only draw a Chariot ridden by an Orc Character. Where two different characters are mounted on a chariot (for example an Orc and a Goblin), then the character that is the most expensive will dictate what Beasts draw the chariot. Two characters may ride the same chariot only if they both have the ‘Trusted Sidekick’ Special Ability. To add Beasts to a Chariot, you must pay half the points cost for the Mount as chosen for a Hero (rounding halves up). For example, to have 2 Warhorses drawing an Empire Chariot, you would pay 8 points per Warhorse.

Any Chaos Chariot may be drawn by either 1 or 2 Daemonic Mounts. (Note, only models with a Mark of Chaos may ride a Daemonic Mount, and they may only ride a Daemonic Mount that follows the same Chaos God. For example only models with the Mark of Khorne may ride a Chariot drawn by Juggernauts). Note also that ‘Daemonic Mount’ in this case covers Daemonic Mount, Juggernaught, Steed of Slaanesh, and Disc of Tzeentch.
Tuskgors must draw a Beastman chariot: +11 points per Tuskgor.
A Special Character's chariot will not have any other crew, and will only contain the Special Character (or characters). If the Character is killed, then the chariot may continue on its own, and will follow all the normal rules for chariots.
Note, a character with 5 or more wounds may not be mounted on a Chariot. A chariot with its rider will have a Unit Strength of 5.
Any Chariot in a Chaos army (Beasts or Mortal) may be given a Mark of Chaos as per the usual rules for Chariot Marks. A Mark of Chaos chosen for a Chariot must be the same as the Chaos Mark for any Daemonic Mount(s) (not including Chaos Steeds) and any Characters mounted on it. If a Daemonic Mount is pulling a Heavy Chariot, then each Daemonic Mount adds a further +1W to the Chariot.
Any Chariot drawn by Skeletal Steeds will follow the usual rules for Combat Resolution as outlined in the Tomb Kings/Vampire Counts army books (ie loss of wounds).

Any Chariot may have Scythes for +20 points. These add +1 Impact hit as described under the rules for Chariots in the Warhammer Rulebook.

Step 6: Magic Items.

Many Special Characters are equipped with at least one form of Magic Item, be it a Weapon, Armour or whatever. If your Special Character is to be equipped with any Magic Items, then the points allowance for Magic Items, which is listed alongside the Racial Upgrade for the character, will indicate how many points he may spend, in the same manner as purchasing Magic Items for normal characters.

In regards to Magic Items, a Special Character has four options when it comes to making their selection.
1) They may decide not to take any Magic Items at all;
2) They may take only Magic Items from their Race's Magic Item list and/or the Common Magic Items list;
3) They may take only Magic Items made from the ‘Personalised Magic Items’ list;
4) They may take a mixture of Magic Items from their own list and/or Magic Items made using the ‘Personalised Magic Items’ list.
Step Seven: Followers and Pets.
Many Special Characters have some form of Follower or Pet. Skarsnik for example has his pet Squig, Gobbla. The characteristics and available abilities for Followers and Pets are outlined under “Followers and Pets”, and Steps One to Six above apply to these Followers and Pets. A Special Character may only ever have one Follower or one Pet, and may not have one of each.

Step Eight: Its Alive!

Once you have created your Special Character, it is now time to give him/her a name, create a background for them, and give an explanation as to why they have the Special Abilities that you have given them. Make the citizens of the Warhammer world tremble in fear at the mention of your Special Character’s name. Empire Lord is instils no sense of worthiness for your opponent. Count Wilhem von Meinkopf, scourge of the Greenskins sounds much more impressive, and gives some semblance of personality. Be creative.

Against The Odds: Enemy units fighting the Character do not gain Combat Resolution bonuses for Flank or Rear Attacks, or Outnumbering.

Awesome Presence: The Character adds +2 to the Combat Resolution of any combat he is part of. Not available to Von Carstein Vampires.

Befuddling: The Special Character may force one Enemy model in base-contact to miss with all Combat attacks (which are directed towards the Befuddling model) once per game. The Special Character may wait until the Enemy has rolled all of his attacks (but before rolling to wound) to decide whether or not he wants to use this ability.

Body Slam: The Character adds +2WS on the turn that he charges.

Close Bond: The army must include two special Characters. The Special Character with this ability has a Close Bond with the other Special Character. If the other Special Character is Slain, then the surviving Special Character suffers from Frenzy for the remainder of the battle.

Close Relationship: The army must include two special Characters. The Special Character with this ability has a Close Relationship with the other Special Character. If the other Special Character is Slain, then the surviving Special Character suffers from Hatred towards the entire enemy army for the remainder of the battle.

Crushing Blow: +1 S on the charge (not available to Blood Dragon Vampires). May not be combined with Terrible Anger.

Daemonically Possessed: The Character gains a 5+ Daemonic Aura save, and Causes Terror. You must choose which God the Daemon follows: Khorne: +4WS, +4S, +4A, Frenzy, Magic Resistance (2); Nurgle: +2T(Max=T6), +4W, +3A, Cloud of Flies, Level 2 Nurgle Wizard; Tzeentch: +4I, +2A, Spell Destroyer, Master of Sorcery, Level 2 Tzeentch Wizard; Slaanesh: +3WS, +4I +3A, Aura of Slaanesh, Level 2 Slaanesh Wizard. For descriptions of Cloud of Flies, Spell Destroyer, Master of Sorcery and Aura of Slaanesh, see the Hordes of Chaos Army Book under the descriptions for Great Unclean Ones, Lords of Change and Keepers of Secrets respectively.
Must take a Leadership Test at the start of each of the Character's turns, as long as he is not fleeing. If failed, roll a D6 on the following table:
1: Deserted: The Daemon leaves the Special Character. Remove all bonuses afforded by the Daemonic Possession. The Character is no longer possessed.
2-4: Struggle: The Daemon and the Character struggle over control. The Special Character may not make any actions this turn. If attacked in combat, attackers must still compare their Weapon Skill to that of the Character, but the Character may not fight back.
5: Stagger: The Special Character moves D6" in a random direction. If he is in Combat, then he does not move, but must strike last this round of Combat. He may fight as normal for the remainder of the turn.
6: Wracked With Pain: The Character suffers D6 S4 hits (normal saves apply) as the Daemon assails the Character with self-inflicted injuries.
Not Available to Daemon Princes or Exalted Daemons. May not be equipped with a Chaos Daemon Sword. No Characteristics may be increased above 10. The bonus characteristics afforded by the Daemon are only bonuses. They do not alter the Base Characteristics of the Special Character for purposes such as Characteristic Tests. For example, a Khorne Daemon (+4S) possesses an Empire Captain (S4). If the Empire Captain had to pass a Strength test, then his unmodified S4 would be used, not the new modified S8.

Devoted Troops: The Character may re-roll a failed 'Look Out Sir' roll, as his Troops will do everything they can to keep him alive. The second roll will stand, even if that too is a failed result.

Escape Artist: The Character may roll an additional D6 when rolling for Fleeing distances. He may then discard any one of the dice rolled. Note, he may not use this ability if he is part of a unit.

Heroic Death: If the Character is slain in a Challenge, then his killer does not gain any bonuses to Combat Resolution for Overkill.

Hurl Enemy: If an enemy character is still alive after suffering 1 or more wounds in Close Combat from the Special Character (after saves), then they are thrown 1" away. If they are part of a unit, then place them 1" behind their unit, and out of combat.

Implacable Hatred: The Special Character may always re-roll failed to hits against His/Her Hated foe. Must have Hatred in addition to this ability. Not Available to Strigoi Vampires.

Impetuous: The Character may roll and additional D6 when rolling for Pursuit distances. He may then discard any one of the dice rolled. Note, he may not use this ability if he is part of a unit (not including Monstrous Mounts or Chariots).

Insane Courage: The Character may re-roll the test for Rallying. The second roll will stand, even if that too is a failed result. Any unit lead by this Character benefits from this rule also.

Inspirational: Any Wounds caused by the Character in Close Combat are also added to the Combat Resolution of friendly units within 12".

Iron Jaw: All attacks are made at -1S against the Character.

Iron Resolve: If the Character is killed make a Ld test for him; if he passes he will remain alive with 1 wound remaining (does not apply if run down by chargers/pursuit or if killed by Killing Blow).

Manipulate Winds of Magic: If the Special Character Miscasts a spell, He/She may add or subtract +/-1 from their roll on the Miscast Table. May not re-roll a result of 2 or 12 (or a 1 or 6 in the case of Orcs and Goblins).

Monster Master: May only be taken by a Character on a Monstrous Mount (not including Chariots). If the Character is slain, then the Monstrous Mount does not need to take a Monster Reaction test. The Monstrous Mount will instead continue to fight as normal.

Nurgle's Rot: This Character has been afflicted with Nurgle's most favourite disease. At the end of each of the Special Character's Close Combat phases (even if he's not fighting in Close Combat) roll a D6 for himself and every model in base contact with him (Including Monstrous Mounts). If you roll a '6' then that model must pass a Toughness test or suffer 1 wound. Armour saves do not apply, but Ward saves may save as normal. If the Character or an affected model has the Mark of Nurgle, then they may re-roll their Toughness to see if thye are wounded, but the second roll will stand. All models that are Immune to Poison are unaffected. Undead and Daemons must test as normal.

Over-inflated Ego: The Special Character must accept all Challenges that are offered, and must not decline. However, whilst fighting a Challenge, the Character is at +1S. Not available to Blood Dragon Vampires.

Powerful Presence: The Character adds +1 to the Combat Resolution of any combat he is part of. Not available to Von Carstein Vampires.

Quick Shot: May shoot as many times as they have Attacks (may not be used with Move/Fire weapons, or Multi-shot weapons).

Recovered Artefact: Any one of the Character's Magic Items may be chosen from any Army Book, other than his own. This represents a trophy from a slain enemy, or a stolen artefact from a Lost Temple etc. The Magic Item must be one of a: Magic Weapon, Armour, Talisman, Enchanted Item; or if the Character is a Wizard, Arcane Item. Special Note: If the Character takes the Tomb Blade from the Vampire Counts army, then they must not be part of a unit to create new Skeletons or Zombies, unless they are already part of a unit of Skeletons or Zombies. If the Character is part of any other unit then the Skeletons or Zombies that are created will be lost immediately.

Reserves: Any one Infantry Unit in the army may be held in Reserve. The unit is not deployed at the start of the game, and from the player's second turn onwards, the unit may enter play by moving onto the table at any point on their own table edge in the same manner as described under "Pursuit off the table" in the main rulebook. If the unit does not take part in the battle, then the opposing player is awarded half their points cost in Victory Points. The unit may still enter play even if the Special Character with this ability is slain.

Saboteur: The Character must also have the Scout ability. The first time that the enemy Misfires with a War machine, they must roll twice on the Misfire! chart and apply the lowest result.

Smooth Talker: The Special Character may force one Enemy in base contact (including one in a Challenge) to take LD test. If the test is Failed, then the Enemy may either fight against its own friendly troops for this round of Combat. Alternatively, the Special Character may chose that the affected model does not fight at all and is struck automatically in for this round of Close Combat. Not Available to Lhamian Vampires.

Summary Execution: The Special Character must be equipped with a Missile Weapon in order to use this Ability. As long as the Character is not engaged in Close Combat, or otherwise prevented from Shooting, then any friendly unit within Line of Sight of the Character (and range of his Missile weapon) may be made an example of. If the unit needs to take a Psychology or Break Test (this includes Rally Tests, but not LD based Spell effects and such), then the Character may execute some troops to try to keep the rest in line. Decide how many troops the Character will shoot before rolling the dice. Remove these troops as casualties, and then subtract the number of casualties from the dice roll. For example, if a Character were to shoot three troops, then the test would be taken at -3 to the dice roll. If the roll was an 8 for example, and the unit's LD is 7, then 8-3=5; the test was passed. Note, that the lowest score possible after modifying the dice rolls in this manner is 5; and a natural double '6' may not be modified at all. No rolls to hit are necessary. May not be used to influence Undead or Daemon units.

Tactical: The Special Character may +1 to the Dice Rolls for Table edges and who gets first turn.

Terrible Anger: The Special Character adds +1S and +1A in the first round of every Close Combat. However, he must also subtract -1I and -1Ld. Terrible Anger cannot be taken by Special Characters who are Immune to Psychology, nor combined with Crushing Blow or Strength of Steel (Blood Dragon's Bloodline Power).

Trusted Sidekick: The Character must be mounted on either a Monstrous Mount or a Chariot to take advantage of this Ability. With this Ability two Characters may ride on the same Mount. Both Characters must have this Ability. Treat the model as 1 unit, and any hits which are randomised to the Rider are further randomised between the two Characters (ie 1-3: Character A, 4-6: Character B). If the Characters are riding a Monstrous Mount, then the Mount will only take a Monster Reaction test if BOTH Characters are slain.

Well Versed: The Wizard may take his spells from any Lore (including Dark, High, any Chaos, Necromancy, Ice, and Skaven, but not Waagghh!) which is not usually available to him. May not take his spells from more than 1 Lore.

Umm...

Je me hais.
